Geocache Description:

http://www.kimmettherefords.com/Farm-History-.html

Gold-Wing Ranch farm history can be dated back to 1784 when the area was settled after the American Revolution by United Empire Loyalists; part of the land was once the farmstead of the historical Mohawk Chief, Deserontyon who fought with the British against the Americans. During the early years of Canada Sir John A. Macdonald owned and/or held the mortgage on the property including the year he became Canada's 1st Prime Minister. The historical Rathbun Family operated the farm as a Horse Ranch under the name of Bay View Ranch for their sprawling Timber Industry Empire, not less than 50 horses were at the farm at one time with horses constantly being shipped back and forth to northern timber camps. With the growth the Industrial Era of Canada in 1881 the farm made way for its place in Canadian Railway history when the Bay of Quinte Railway & Navigation Company ran its Deseronto Junction Line directly through the land to connect the Town of Deseronto with the Grand Trunk Railway. Also a time of Agricultural historical significance when the farm was a Canadian Experimental Farm Station, reported in the Ministry of Agriculture Experimental Farms Report. The farm was reporting on sugar beet production, soil quality, water quality and fruit production to support the progress of the Agricultural Industry in Canada. The Rathbun Family and their agricultural quest, in 1883 it was reported in the Herds and Flocks of Ontario that H.B. Rathbun made the County of Hastings their own in Shorthorns & Jerseys producing ribbon winning cattle. The most exciting era at the farm was during WW1 in the years of 1917 & 1918 when the land was secured for an airfield for the Royal Flying Corps to train Canadian, American and British pilots to fight in Europe during the Great War. Sadly over 50 men lost their lives around/or in the fields while in training; one German spy was reported killed firing squad style by the oak grove near sucker creek & buried in front of the barracks. To this day it is tradition to “not cut the hay” at that location; it is recognized “where the grass stays green”. In 1933 the Kimmett family rented the farm during the Great Depression & later purchased the farm. They first operated a Dairy farm, for the past three decades have been making a lasting contribution to the Polled Hereford breed by operating a Cow-Calf Production under the very fitting name of Gold-Wing Ranch. http://www.kimmettherefords.com/Farm-History-.html
