Geocache Description:

The Farmer's Highling canal trail is scenic as it meanders through a variety of parks and open space property. This trail will bring you to the "back door" of Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge.

Two Ponds is the smallest urban unit in the National Wildlife Refuge System. The Refuge covers 72.2 acres--63.2 acres of uplands, 9 acres of wetlands, and 3 small ponds, containing various types of plant communities. The setting was once characterized by plant communities of the High Plains--shortgrass and mixed-grass prairie. Livestock grazing and plowing of prairie sod for crops by European settlers altered the native plant and animal communities. More recently, housing developments and urbanization have also decreased the land available for native wildlife. In 1990, a local citizen's group was instrumental in saving this site from development. Their efforts contributed to the establishment of Two Ponds NWR in 1992. (write up from the Two Ponds website)

The west side of the refuge is open year round for visitors to enjoy wildlife viewing. The east side is open May through October by either the main gait located east of 80th and Kipling, or by the back gait. We hope you can take time to explore Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge while you are in the area.

The cache is not located within the National Wildlife Refuge, but rather on the Farmer's Highline Canal, a public access trail which disects the two sections of Two Ponds. Feel free to use the bridges (put up in recent years by Eagle Scouts) to enjoy both parts of Two Ponds NWR. Since this cache is located outside the NWR, it is available all year round.
