Buddy was the best dog we ever had – and we had some really great dogs! He came along a few years after his predecessor passed away, following my wife home from a walk in the forest. He looked like he had been mauled by coyotes but Sandi nursed him back to health. “No more dogs” I said. I can’t take the heartache when they die. We also noticed that though he was a young dog (or older pup) he seemed to be somewhat trained and mostly housebroken. Clearly he belonged to someone. We watched the paper, put up signs, and talked to local Vets – but no one claimed him. We put him in the back yard and left the gate open assuming he would return to his rightful home. Be he wasn’t having any of it – he had adopted us! The kids loved him and so did Sandi so I finally gave in and he became “the best dog we ever had”. I will not say “owned” because he obviously is the one that did the adopting and so HE owned US! Sandi passed away from cancer in 2000 and Buddy followed her a few years later. Like Sandi, his ashes were spread in the sea at Yachats so they could spend eternity together.
