This is a six-stage tour of public art along Palo Alto's “other” shopping district which, like the University Avenue, is replete with small stores, coffee spots, and restaurants. It is also close to the Santa Clara North County Court House for those who are lucky enough to be assigned jury duty there.
This area used to be the old town of Mayfield which started when James Otterson opened a wayside inn near the intersection of California Avenue and El Camino Real in 1853. Little evidence remains of its existence, however, check out the Herring Box Geocache (GCKPPZ) for one of the few remaining historical markers depicting one of the significant events of the area. Unfortunately, none of the artworks in this search depict anything of the colorful history of old Mayfield other than the train mural on Birch Street just north of California Avenue.
The first five stages may be done in any order to collect the required information from which the coordinates of the final stage where the magnetic micro-cache is located can be determined. The stages are given in order starting from the entry to the shopping area on the Northeast end near the train station and proceeding along the avenue towards El Camino Real. The end-to-end length is about 0.6 miles and is entirely along California Avenue.
