This is one of the few places in the surrounding towns where anyone can drive up and enjoy a nice view of the Sound year round, This is a replacement for a micro which was in this spot from 2005 until late summer 2011. I think this container might last even longer.
I was the last to find the old cache in July 2011. A tragic fire on Christmas Eve 2011 claimed five lives about 200 feet from here. If you are spiritually inclined, spare a moment as you enjoy the view of Long Island Sound to think of them.
The house was demolished after the fire, only a vacant lot remains. Since the fire was national news, I didn't want geocachers to be confused with morbid gawkers, so I waited several months to place this cache. I had another reason to be in Shippan today and the weather is beautiful, so I decided it was time.
I'm not placing this cache because of the tradegy which happened here, but in spite of it. The beauty of the sea and sky endures regardless of our triumphs and tradgedies.
The cache is not a nano, but you will need to bring your own pen. The hint is a complete spoiler, since there may be muggles about, especially on a nice day.
While this little beach is open to the public the street is posted with no parking signs. People are always stopping by for a quick look at the sound and there are often contractors parked here and other folks having lunch. The cache can be found quickly without going more than a few feet from your car or for a longer stay you can look for parking on one of the streets a little further from the water.
