Geocache Description:

An out of the way undeveloped Town Of Yorktown Park

You are in the middle of a field. There appears to be nothing here. But perhaps, if you peer back far enough into the mists of time…

The late 1800s and early 1900s saw Mohegan develop into a famous resort community. Lured by easy train travel in a few hours, city residents could experience total rural relaxation and a beautiful lake. Some ten resorts operated for 50 years, offering lodging and first-rate entertainment. Among the more famous were the Mohegan Country Club and Bungalow Colony, located on Route 6 (where the Lakeside and Villas condominiums are now); The Sonoqua Lodge (Mohegan Avenue and Christine, two blocks due south of your present spot); Uncas Lodge on Crown Island; Lakelawn Cottages (Mohegan Avenue on the East side); Rock Hill Lodge (Holland Club property on the West side); the Shanty; the St. Nicholas Hotel; the Mohegan Inn; Mohegan Gardens Bungalow Colony and Tall Timbers Bungalow Colony.

You are standing in the middle of what was Tall Timbers, actually, the baseball field. Bungalows on both sides surrounded this field. The only surviving vestige of all of this is located about a quarter mile south of where you now stand, the location of the still existent Camp Nabby Day Camp, started by Abraham “Nabby” Nabatoff, owner of Mohegan Gardens Bungalow Colony and half of the infamous duo locally known as The Mad Russians. Tall Timbers also had a day camp, and they were archrivals of Nabby Day Camp. Several times during the summer, the camps would play baseball, half the games at Nabby, half at Tall Timber. I went to Nabby Day Camp every summer for most of my childhood years, and I stood here, in this field playing right field almost 50 years ago.

The cache is located off of the trail that climbs up Jones Hill (718ft) and begins at the north end of this field. A bit wet at the start until mid-summer, after the first 25 feet it turns into a nice wood road. The trail veers right of the summit, which is covered by cell towers and water tanks.

This is my first cache hide, I tried to get the coordinates as exact as I could, and I welcome corrections from more experienced cachers if required.

Oh, and the other half of the The Mad Russians – my grandfather.
