Monestir de Santa Maria de Ripoll
Bressol de Catalunya. Així és com es coneix el Monestir de Santa Maria de Ripoll i no és estrany. Fundat pel comte Guifré el Pelós l’any 879, sota la direcció de l’abat Oliba esdevé un centre religiós i cultural de primer ordre, amb un temple romànic ampli i majestuós i un scriptorium amb una gran producció literària, a l'alçada d'altres abadies europees d'aquest període.
La portalada del monestir, del segle XII, és la gran protagonista del conjunt. Dóna la benvinguda a fidels i curiosos i és una de les grans peces escultòriques del romànic europeu. Està totalment esculpida amb escenes de l’Antic Testament i al•legories. D’aquí que sigui coneguda com “la Bíblia de pedra”. La seva monumentalitat testimonia la grandesa que va viure Ripoll. No en va, durant molts anys el monestir va ser també el panteó dels comtes de Besalú i de Girona.
L'edifici va passar per diverses ampliacions i reconstruccions motivades per la falta d'espai, incendis, un terratrèmol i pillatges. Al 1886, el bisbe de Vic, Josep Morgades, encarrega la reconstrucció del monestir a l’arquitecte Elies Rogent. Ripoll recupera l’església i el claustre del monestir del segle XI amb una interpretació neoromànica.
Visitar Santa Maria de Ripoll és acostar-se a un dels edificis més bells i evocadors de Catalunya.

Founded by Comte Guifré el Pelós (Count Wilfred the Hairy) in the year 879, under the direction of the Abbot Oliba, it became a major religious and cultural centre, with a large and majestic Romanesque church and a scriptorium with great literary production, on a level with other abbeys in Europe during this period
The monastery’s 12th century portalada is the most outstanding feature of the complex. This doorway that welcomed the faithful and curious, is one of the great sculptures of European Romanesque. It is completely sculpted with scenes from the Old Testament and allegories. This is why it became known as "the Bible of stone". Its monumentality bears witness to Ripoll’s years of splendor. It is with good reason that for many years the monastery was also the pantheon of the counts of Besalú and Girona.
The building underwent several stages of enlargement and reconstruction due to the lack of space, fires, an earthquake and plunder.In 1886, the Bishop of Vic, Josep Morgades, commissioned the reconstruction of the monastery to the architect Elies Rogent. Ripoll recovered the church and the cloister of the 11th century monastery with a Romanesque Revival interpretation.
