Geocache Description:

Although the Oyate Trail Series has been discontinued May 2015 I wanted to leave this cache in place.

This is #25 of the Oyate Trail Geocache series. Starting just north of Sioux City, the Oyate Trail follows Highways 50 and 18 along the southern border of South Dakota all the way to Edgemont. There are 110 geocaches spaced approximately every 3 miles along the trail. These caches are numbered from east to west, #1 to #110.

The first 50 geocachers to find and log at least 100 of the 110 caches along the trail are eligible for an Official Oyate Trail Geocaching Coin. To apply for your coin, email Charlie @ saltcamp@gwtc.net with all 100 + codes that you will find in the upper right corner of the cache log. These codes must be in order, #1 to #110 for example: 1D, 2O, 3N, 4T, etc. Include your name and address so if the codes are correct, Charlie can send you your coin.

This cache is located near Blachnik Museum which is located in Vancura Memorial Park in Tabor, South Dakota. It is located/hidden with permission of the caretakers of this park and has a combination padlock (see hint below). You are welcome to walk around the park and view the historic buildings.

Among the buildings located on the grounds of the Vancura Memorial Park is Saint John the Baptist Church, the First Czech Catholic Church in Dakota Territory. The organ and other artifacts provide a window into 1869 worship. You will also find the original Tabor Jail, built in 1901, which was constructed of lumber laid flat to discourage escape. Last but not least, is the Nikl Jewelry Store of the 1920’s to the 1930’s representing a village store and Post Office.

Just a few steps from the Vancura Memorial Park stands Blachnik School, 1886, Dist. 26. The school is home to the Blachnik Museum. All of the contents are creations of Emil Blachnik who attended the school. The museum is now just a few feet from the home that Emil built. Emil and Evelyn Beran have hosted groups at the museum. Evelyn Beran is the daughter of Emil Blachnik and has told the stories about the many pieces on display.
