Geocache Description:

This cache is designed to bring you to a gem in James City County’s collection of parks. Freedom Park, a 600 acre forested retreat, seems to be short only on geocaches. The Park is Open daily 7a to sunset. No fee for park entry.

Cache is about a half mile easy trek on a well maintained trail most of which has been there 300 years or more. Even in September when we chose cache placement there was very little undergrowth besides some wonderful ferns so no bushwhacking and definitely no plants need to be disturbed for the find. No need to venture off the trail either so please be stealthy. I took several averaged readings with my Magellan and was getting lots of bounce so I did my best with maps to choose the right coordinates. Let your geosenses rule over your tool and pay attention to the cache title. Watch out for critters - I haven't seen any but I'm sure they are out there. Freedom Park is an absolutely fantastic piece of terra firma shared by an eclectic group who work together to make it a wonderful place to visit. It is home to one of the nation’s earliest Free Black Settlements in America, the Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association, and the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. There are million dollar facilities located at the Interpretative Center and places for picnic. A recent addition is a treetop adventure course. Funny thing happened on the way to picking our spot for this cache. My husband spotted a great hidey place and off I went to average coordinates only to find that said spot was already occupied by a cache that was either abandoned or maybe a letterbox - it was water logged so I couldn't tell! Things have a way of turning out as they should as we ventured on and found just the right spot for what we think is currently the only active geocache in Freedom Park. Geodogs are welcome on leashes. There is a cleanup station located just outside the entrance to the Botanical Gardens. In fact, while placing the cache we were caught by a golden retriever puppy and her masters, one of which was an earth science teacher that was familiar with geocaching. This cache has been approved by and registered with James City County Parks and Recreation, Registration Permit FRP-00012012. If you would like to place a cache on JCC Park property, JCC geocaching policy and form can be found here http://www.jamescitycountyva.gov/pdf/parksrecpdfs/2012documents/GeocachePolicyPermit.pdf Cache initially stocked with 2 Signal pins, a safety whistle, a geocaching bracelet, crayon bubbles, and a Williamsburg-James City County pin.
