wenig Bodenleben (also Würmer und andere zersetzende Organismen)
dadurch etwas höher (also weniger sauer).
Fällen also reiner Sand.
dargestellt:
- O: Organischer
Auflageforizont, beim Podsol aus Rohhumus
- Aeh: Oberbodenhorizont
(A) mit eluvialen Merkmalen (Auswaschung) und
geringem Humusgehalt
- Ae: Oberbodenhorizont
(A) mit eluvialen Merkmalen (Auswaschung)
- Bh: Unterbodenhorizont
(B) mit Humusanreicherung
- Bs: Unterbodenhorizont
(B) mit Anreicherung von Sesquioxiden
(Al2O3 und
Fe2O3)
- C: Ausgangs-"Gestein"
(C), bei Podsolen häufig reiner Sand

The
coordinates of this EarthCache point to an outcrop of soil in the
Rundshorn Forest. At this outcrop a very typical podsol can be
observed (Fig. 1). Please park your car at the parking coordinates
stated below. From the parking area it's within a short walking
distance to the EC. Please bring a folding rule or a measuring
tape. You will need this to answer the questions.
A Podsol is a soil type which is
typical for nutrient- and lime-poor conditions under
humid-temperate to humid-cool climatic conditions. In many cases
podsols are sandy soils. Because of their appearance, podsols are
called "grey soils" or "bleached soils" in German language. The
term "podsol" originates from the Russion "под
зола" (pod sola = under ash). This is based
on the appearance as well. Corresponding to the US soil-taxonomy a
podsol is called spodosol.
Good initial conditions for the
devolpment of a podsol are unconsolidated sediments rich in silica
but poor in lime. The missing lime leads to low pH-values because
there is no buffering capacity. Due to the lack of buffering
capacity the acidification of the topsoil increases. Nutrients are
eluated quickly by the percolating water through the sandy
sediment. Since the conditions in the topsoil are rather acidic,
there is only little soil biota compared to other soils. For
example worms are an important part of the soil biota, because they
are incorporating litter which is accumulating on the soil surface
into the soil. Therefore they are important for the nutrient supply
of a soil. This lack of soil biota leads to the nutrient-poor
conditions described above. Since the litter is not decomposed by
soil biota as fast as in other soils, a thick layer of organic
litter (duff) accumulates on the soil surface. In the presented
profile, the layer of organic litter is rather thin. From this
layer of duff fulvic acids are eluated and drain into the topsoil
which increases the acidification. Due to these acidic conditions
in topsoil, the process of podsolification starts: Aluminium- and
iron-hydroxides are water-soluble under acidic conditions and are
therefore eluated by percolating water. Likewise humic substances
are eluated. This leads to the typical ash-coloured topsoil of a
podsol. In the subsoil is still some buffering capacity left, which
leads to an increase of the pH-value (less acidic). This higher
pH-value leads to the chemical precipitation of aluminium- and
iron-hydroxides as well as the humic substances, because they are
not water-soluble anymore under these conditions. The precipitation
of these substances forms a dark accumulation horizon of humus and
a brown accumulation horizon of the sesquioxides in the subsoil.
The precipitation and accumulation can reach dimensions that the
dark subsoil becomes totally consolidated. The result is known as a
special kind of hardpan. The foration of hardpan can't be observed
in the presented profile. Below the dark subsoil horizons you can
observe the parent sediment material which is not affected by the
podsolification. In most cases this is pure sand.
In the consequence of this process a
podsol shows a typical sequence which you can follow clearly when
you have a look at the outcrop in the field. The above explained
depth dependent parameters are shown in figure 2:
- O: layer of organic
litter, typically duff
- Aeh: topsoil (A) with
eluvial characteristics and low content of
humus
- Ae: topsoil (A) with
eluvial characteristics
- Bh: subsoil (B) with
accumulation of humus
- Bs: subsoil (B) with
accumulation os sesquioxides (Al2O3
and Fe2O3)
- C: parent sediment material
(C), in most cases pure sand
