Geocache Description:

Almost a drive-by on SH 3 south of Wanganui. This striking, historic building is a rare example of a timber blockhouse built at the time of the New Zealand wars. Please do not visit this site at night-time.

Photo taken by Moturoa

The Cameron blockhouse, built in 1868, was one of a number of redoubts built on high ground to provide a safe place for settlers and their families if they were under attack.  As an innovative method of protecting against bullets and fire, the walls were packed with clay.

The cache is not inside the blockhouse. You will need to bring your own pen. You are looking for a small tube 9cm long.

Please do not visit this site at night-time.  Although there is full public access (signposted) to this historic place, it is surrounded by farmland and there are nearby houses.  Local residents would be most concerned about visitors arriving in the dark.
