Crosswinds Marsh Meanderings 2019 Series
For the 5th year in a row we continue the geocaching community’s recognition of Wayne County’s efforts in providing replacement wildlife wetlands habitat removed by the Detroit Metro Airport expansion. Crosswinds Marsh Wetland Interpretive Preserve is one of the largest man-made wetlands in the country. It was built to replace the wetlands that were paved over to expand Wayne County's (the McNamara terminal). Wayne County, The area is managed by the Wayne County Parks.
On August 10 the Parks system put on a Hobby day and invited the Crosswinds Cache Crew to participate again. As part of the day's activities a Geocaching event was held which included the launch of 12 Geocaches dedicated to the history of the reserve. This cache is one of them.
A link to all 12 of the caches may be FOUND HERE. In the cover of the cache you will find a four digit code. Record this code for entering into a online form for registration for a commemorative collectible for those that complete the series. The link to the form is found HERE.
The Insects
While some people may cringe when they hear the word “insect”, most know that not all insects are cringe-worthy. In fact, insects are the primary pollinators for many of the wildflowers we enjoy and much of the world’s food crops. Bees, butterflies, moths, ants, beetles, flies and other insects are pollinators, which means when they feed on a flower, they transfer pollen from one plant to another. As a result of pollination that occurs, the plant will develop a fruit with seeds. Those seeds are the next generation of plants. At least 80 species of butterflies and moths and 15 species of dragonflies and damselflies have been observed at Crosswinds Marsh. In addition, more than 20 species of aquatic insects are observed on a regular basis as school children explore the marsh habitat every spring, summer, and fall.
