Geocache Description:

Mount Stirling is a mountain in the Victorian Alps of the Great Dividing Range.  The mountain has an elevation of 1,747–1,749 metres above sea level.


GEELONG GRAMMAR SCHOOL HUT

Geelong Grammar School Hut on the other side of the summit from Bluff Spur Hut is owned by Geelong Grammar School and is used during cross country skiing by students from the Timbertop campus.  The original hut was built in 1965 and was upgraded in 1986 and is actively utilised by Grammar students for bushwalking and cross-country skiing however is also open to others.

Construction

The hut is made out of corrugated iron and is insulated.  Despite its small appearance, the hut has about five rooms.

Access is via the Circuit Road seasonally closed, usually from the Thursday after the June long weekend till the Thursday before Melbourne Cup weekend and then Clear Hills Track which is seasonally closed from 1st May through to 30th November.

The Circuit Road is suitable for 2WD vehicles however can be rough in sections.  Clear Hills Track is 4WD only and should be negotiated only by those with 4WD experience and should be avoided during wet conditions.

Be Prepared

Please DO NOT attempt during heavy snow coverage.  Digging can be both futile and dangerous.

The best months for walking are from November through to April, however, weather conditions can change rapidly, and snowfalls and blizzards can occur at any time of the year.  During the summer period, bushfires can also pose a threat so check the CFA website for updates prior to departure – you should not venture into State Parks or the Alpine National Parks during Code Red days.

Be prepared with:

• Wind and waterproof jackets
• Warm clothing – hat, gloves, sunglasses, and strong footwear
• Food and water
• First aid kit and sunscreen
• Map and compass
• Check the weather forecast before departing
• Let someone know where you are going
• Mobile phone (reception in some areas)
