Geocache Description:

You've kayaked to numerous caches or just for fun so there's no denying your love for paddling the waterways of Michigan. Now it's time time prove your endurance and skills utilizing a floating mode of transportation across a 2-day, ~31 mile trek down the Manistee River.
Read through the details below and, if you have what it takes, come along for the 3rd Annual Kayak Trek event.

Time & Locations
  • To keep people who don't have what it takes from just showing up at the launch and logging in, the official event starts at the posted coordinates around 11am and will 1/2 hour. You must be present in order to log as attended. In the spirit of the event, however, it's all about the 2-day group outing on the water. Please participate.

  • Estimated Timeline:
    DAY 1
    (Saturday 8/20):
7:30am - Meet at Launch to drop kayaks and stage vehicles
    9am - Launch
    4pm - Reach Campsite
    - Set up, eat, and relax
    DAY 2 (Sunday 8/21):
7am - Wake, eat and pack
    9am - Launch
    5pm - Extraction
6pm - Dinner in town or leave for home

  • Waypoints have been added for Launch, Camp, and Extraction. Below are the links to maps for the Trek.

Camping
  • The plan is to camp on Government Island itself. If this is not possible or there is no room, we will stay at the Government Landing Campground nearby.

  • There is no fee or registration required for camping.

  • The sites are rustic, meaning no water or electricity. We're on a kayak trek here, people. Deal with it!

What to Expect
  • B.Y.O.B. Bring your own boat! We will not be going through a rental outfitter for this trip. However, if you don't own your own craft, and want to go that route, please do. Just make those arrangements yourself.

  • PACK ACCORDINGLY We go rain or shine, warm or cold and camp overnight. You will get wet, possibly hurt, eaten by bugs, etc. Everything you take must be packed along in your kayak. Make sure you are prepared for anything.

  • BRING YOUR OWN FOOD Eat well before Day 1 launch or bring food to eat on the water. We should get to the campsite with plenty of time to set up and prepare dinner. In the morning we'll eat, pack, and launch again. You'll need a lunch for Day 2 that you can eat on the water. Make sure everything is sealed up and dry and you have somewhere to pack out your trash. AND BRING ENOUGH WATER!

  • TRANSPORTATION It would be best if you carpooled or were even dropped off by someone at the launch and picked up at the end. This will eliminate the need to transport kayaks back to the launch after we are all beat from the trip. Team up and work out those details yourself.
