Johannes (Jan) Peeck, a Dutch Trader/Explorer/Tavern
Extraordinaire, settled near this location in the 1600s. Married to
Maria Peeck, the couple became well-known for Peeck's Tavern, and
were among the original inhabitants of this land, which later
inherited the name of "Peekskill" after Jan's hunting lodge.
Johannes also worked the trade and broker business to keep up with
money, making deals for furs with native tribes. As a result, the
nearby bridge is named in his honor, despite his somewhat shady
mark with authorities at the time. More info on Johannes (Jan)
Peeck can be found here.
As for this cache it can be found along the Annsville Creek near an
old structure of years past. Take a moment while paddling the
waterway to envision what this area may have been like prior to the
days of infrastructure, when traders, farms, taverns, and shipyards
proved themselves to be the backbone of pre-American society.
