This cache is a part of a series of Star Wars themed caches along the High Peak Trail. These caches are designed to be able to be found by cycling, walking, or (horse) riding and are available to most abilities. This cache highlights the gold-plated and self-righteous protocol droid, C-3PO.
Threepio first appeared in Episode IV: A New Hope alongside R2-D2 and has companioned him in every Star Wars film to date, excluding Solo: A Star Wars Story. He was designed to interact with organics beings, programmed primarily for etiquette and protocol. He was fluent in over six million forms of communication and developed a fussy and worry-prone personality throughout his many decades of operation. Along with his counterpart, the astromech droid R2-D2, C-3PO constantly found himself directly involved in pivotal moments of galactic history and aided in saving the galaxy on many occasions.
Threepio was built from spare parts by Anakin Skywalker, a human slave who lived in Mos Espa, a city on the Outer Rim world of Tatooine. After Anakin left Tatooine to become a Jedi, C-3PO became the property of the Lars household, until Anakin returned to Tatooine, when Threepio served Padmé Amidala throughout the Clone Wars. Shortly after the Clone Wars, C-3PO's memory was erased, though R2-D2's memory was not.
C-3PO and R2-D2 were assigned to the Alderaan cruiser Tantive IV, where they served senator Bail Organa for nineteen years. The two droids then became entangled in the Galactic Civil War when Princess Leia Organa of the Rebel Alliance entrusted them with the original plans to the Death Star to give to Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine. After meeting Skywalker's son, Luke and the smuggler Han Solo, the droids helped rescue Princess Leia from the Death Star. They became directly attached to the three humans, helping them and their rebellion defeat the Empire and restore freedom to the galaxy, most notably by convincing the Ewoks to aid the Rebels at the Battle of Endor. Following the Battle of Endor, Threepio continued to serve Princess Leia, who was now a Resistance General, fighting against the malevolence of the First Order.
