Geocache Description:

A traditional cache hidden close to the construction site of the New Loxwwod Lock on the route of the old Wey Arun canal in Loxwood.

This cache is part of the Wey and Arun Cache Series - a 'power trail' style series placed along the route of the old Wey Arun canal. The canal was abandonned in 1873 and had layed derelict and unused for over a hundred years before an enthusiatic band of volunteers commenced restoration. This series has been placed to highlight the amazing work already completed by the The Wey & Arun Canal Trust along with the monumental scale of the task remaining.

I have tried to use a mix of cache types/hiding places to keep it interesting...

7) The New Loxwood Lock

Suggested parking is in the Wey Arun Canal Trust car park behind the Onslow Arms PH in Loxwood at N 51 04.198 W 000 30.802

In order to provide a navigable crossing under the B2133 the descision has been made to lower a 400 yard section of the canal behind the Onslow Arms. This requires a new lock West of the road crossing which is currently under construction. The rise of the Brewhurst Lock will also be reduced and a new tunnel constructed under the road.

The cache is a small loc-loc container hidden in a camouflage bag

The canal towpath is mainly a well maintained bridal path along this stretch and should be suitable for bicycles and all terrain buggies.

The caches are situated close to the canal and as always, care should be taken with dogs and children around the deep locks and water. There are also stands of Giant Russian Hogweed along sections of the towpath - this is an impressive plant (looks like 12 foot cow parsley) but it has caustic sap and will cause blistering of exposed skin, especially in strong sunlight, so although no caches are hidden close to it, you should still be carefull.

This cache has been placed with the kind permission of the The Wey & Arun Canal Trust.

See Wey and Arun Cache Series for additional resources (a printable list of coordinates, maps etc).
