DUART POINT
Sir William Black Memorial Lighthouse
This Lighthouse is also sometimes known as Duart Point Lighthouse. It is situated just along the east coast of Mull from Duart Castle at the easternmost point of the island. The automatic, solar-powered light is on the top of a small castellated Gothic tower built of granite. The lighthouse was built in 1900 as memorial to the Scottish novelist, William Black (1841-1898). It was placed at his favourite spot by a group of his friends who commissioned the Edinburgh architect, Sir William Lieper, to design it.
Getting there: Please start from the Duart Castle car park, if arriving by car. There is no suitable place to park along the approach road, which is, in any case, used by tour buses. Ignore this advice at risk to your car.
Walk back along the road from the castle car park until you reach a gate (on the left) at a road bend: a line of trees running away from the road at this point confirms that you are in the right place.
Once through the gate - please refasten securely - walk up-field to a skyline gate. Through this gate - fasten this securely, too - turn left alongside a fence for a short distance, then follow narrow grassy paths that work their way downwards to a point where you overlook the lighthouse. Then descend through bracken, down to the lighthouse.
Please note: The cache is placed very close to a cliff edge. Do not allow children or dogs to run freely here, or to approach the GZ; keep them under close control. Overall the T rating is no more than T3, but the final few strides take this closer to a T4.5.
