Geocache Description:

The cache is in a small plastic camo'ed container. It is only big enough for coin exchanges, small buttons, smashed pennies and the like.

This cache is located in Junipero Serra County Park. The terrain is anything from 1.5 to 2.5 stars, (a small stroll or a hike) depending upon where you park your car and which entrance you use. The main entrance requires a fee, but there are two walk in entrances which are free. Most of the trails are loops, some of which have incredible views of San Bruno Mountain, the airport, Coyote Point, and the Bay. The cache is available from sunrise to sunset as posted. You'll have to leave your bikes at home for this one. The park has an abundance of poison oak, but there shouldn't be any at the cache site. The trails are also free of P.O. There are many picnic areas and a large playground. There is a pilot program (June 15, 2019 through December 15, 2019) to allow dogs off leash. The land the park occupies is part of a north-facing ridge that was once quarried for Franciscan Sandstone. The Serra Fault forms the park's eastern side. Prior to 1800 the Costonoan Native Americans lived in the area and fed off the local shellfish, berries, nuts, herbs, and small mammals common to the park. The parkland was originally part of the 15,000-acre Buri-Buri Rancho of Jose Sanchez. After 1860, the title was acquired by D.O. Mills, James Lux, and Ansel Easton. The land was subsequently sub-divided and in 1956 San Mateo County purchased some of it. The park is named after Father Serra, the missionary who came to California with Don Gaspar de Portola in 1770 and who was responsible for founding the missions from San Diego to Sonoma.
