Geocache Description:

Inverkeithing’s natural harbour has a long history and was first documented in 1129, providing shelter for shipping on the Forth.

Benefiting from it’s position between Edinburgh and the rest of Fife and beyond, Inverkeithing was one of Scotland’s leading seaports from the 12th century and was ranked as the seventh largest port in Scotland from 1327-1331.

In 18TH and 19th centuries shipping coal from the Halbeath Colliery and others in the Townhill area was an important trade for Inverkeithing. Ships coming into the port for cargoes of coal deposited their ballast of stones, in the area on the eastern side of the bay. This area gradually built up and became known as the Ballast Bank.

The ballast Bank is now a recreation area for the community and in August the site for Inverkeithing Highland Games.

Parking can be found at the way point at Preston Cresent , Inverkeithing
