Geocache Description:

Then: In 1898, the City of Pittsburgh constructed the Marshalsea mental institution to house the area's most seriously insane patients. By 1916, Marshalsea had been renamed to the Pittsburgh City Home and the Hospital at Mayview. Eventually known as Mayview State Hospital, the asylum housed as many as 3700 patients, some of whom labored on the surrounding farmlands. Escapes were not uncommon, and because of the nearby wooded terrain and winding ravines, escapees were difficult to track down.

Now: In 1996, the township of Upper St. Clair purchased the Mayview Farm Parcel from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and combined it with the Boyce Parcel to create Boyce/Mayview Park. Your "escapades" will actually begin in the adjacent Baker Park, off of Morrow Road in Upper St. Clair. Parking is available very close to the starting trailhead. (N 40° 20.095 W 080° 05.871)

The Hunt: This is a three-stage multi-cache. Stage One (tupperware) contains coordinates and hints for finding Stage Two. Stage Two (altoids) contains coordinates and specific instructions to do an offset for the Final Cache (ammo can). Stick to obvious trails, unless the field hints suggest otherwise. There’s no need to do any major bushwacking. As you make your getaway, the sights may range from calming to confusing...only your former psychiatrist could help you sort these things out.

I suggest bringing a pen/paper, a compass, and a sense of humor for the offset. Done correctly, you should indeed look like a mental patient. ;) Upon completion, just hop back on the trail and continue onwards as the trail loops back to the parking lots. As you exit, you will pass very close to some nearby homes, so please be mindful of noise. Remember, you’re now a lunatic on the lam. Good luck!...and shine on, you crazy diamond!

Important Notes: The township conducts a controlled archery hunt during posted periods in the fall and winter. The exact periods of these hunts are posted by the township at all of the park’s trailheads. As always, it is strongly recommended that you wear 250 sq. in. of blaze orange during these periods. Park hours are sunrise to sunset and unfortunately, dogs and cats are not permitted.

Being the first cache placement for Team YemonYime, we’ve made the contents so enticing, you’ll froth at the mouth. But since you’re a stark raving lunatic, you’d do that anyway. The first finder can choose from any of several keen items such as a 1 litre bota, a first aid kit, 12 hour glow sticks (YemonYime flavored), or a YJTB. Have fun and good luck on your escape!
