Sunset at Shanty
Hollow |
Without doubt the most difficult cache placement in Warren County.
This regular sized cache is located in a popular local climbing
area known as Shanty Hollow. The lake area is owned and operated by
the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The actual cache is located on a free standing boulder which
offers 2 easy (5.7-5.8) bolted climbs. The climbs can also be top
roped if you scurry to the top. The cache itself is located on the
parking lot side of the rock. If you are facing the bolts it is on
the left side, if you are facing the trail which runs along the
lake, it is on the right side. Pictures below show the exact cache
placement. To get the cache you will need to scurry to the top of
the rock and secure a rappel line. You will then need to drop 5-10
feet and be able to lock off to retrieve the cache.
You will not be able to retrieve this cache without
climbing/rappel equipment. At a minimum you will need a
climbing rope (please do not attempt this without actual climbing
gear and knowledge of how to use it), a harness, a decent device
(ATC or figure 8), several carabiners (some of which are locking).
I would not advice the attempting of this cache without a fellow
climber.
For an experienced climber, this will be an easy grab, but if
you do not have the gear and experience you will not be to complete
the cache. Please follow all posted rules and leave the area better
than you found it.
