Note: The snowmobile trail has been rerouted since this cache was placed. The old trail (logging road) is still obvious and passable by foot/ski/snowshoe as of 10/31/20 although there is some blowdown.
I had snowmobiled by this spot for years and thought many times it would be a great place for a cache because there is an interesting rock formation here. It is only about a 15-20 foot rock wall but it's pretty neat, especially in the winter when covered with snow and ice.
Prior to the Mid-Winter Geocaching Get-Together 2014 I happened to take this trail back to Speculator from Perkins Clearing. I was not planning on dropping a cache here this time, but I was headed into town to work on some other caches for the event so fortunately I had some supplies in my pack. Also conveniently, I had just caught up to the D.R.A.G. of Speculator club groomer so it was a perfect spot to stop and let the groomer proceed down the trail at 5 MPH grooming speed. I might ride slower than most snowmobilers, but not that slow.
A free snowmobile trail map is available at all local businesses and from the Adirondacks Speculator Region Chamber of Commerce.
It is only about a .2 mile straight line bushwhack from the highway but you can find easier ways to it than bushwhacking straight in.
It is an easy hike/ski from the Brister Brook parking area.
You may find it convenient to visit this cache while working on another one.
