Geocache Description:

Welcome to Matthews, NC.  Matthews wasn't always called Matthews, as a matter of fact in the early 1800s farmers were moving and clearing land, mostly for cotton fields and the land was being cleared so fast that all that was left after chopping down trees were stumps and it got the name Stumptown!

In 1825 John MIles Fullwood was appointed as the areas postmaster.  Fullwood operated a stagecoach, depot, store and post office from his house.  Mail coming to the area was addressed to Fullwood station and the Stumptown name gradually faded away and the area became known as Fullwood.  After the Civil War a sawmill was established and building the area was well underway and Fullwood became a fledgeling town.

By the 1970s the stagecoach era was fading into history and on December 15, 1874 the first train stopped in Fullwood.  The depot was named Matthews Station after Edward Matthews, a director of the Carolina Central Railroad.  By 1875 mail was no longer being addressed to Fullwood Station but to Matthews Station since it was coming in by train and the Fullwood name gradually faded as well.  In 1879 the Town of Matthews officially became incorporated as a municipality in the state of North Carolina.  The 1880 Census lists 191 residents, and today the town has about 35,000 residents and growing.

This is a nano cache for good reason, lots of Muggles typically in the area so stealthily find and sign the cache.  You will need a couple ToTs (Tools of the Trade), a pair of tweezers would be good and your own pen or pencil is a must!  Plenty of parking in the area.

Congratulations to scsw33ti3 for being the FTF!!
