Bald Mountain offers a beautiful hike and some fabulous views. With numerous vistas overlooking the Rutland valley, visitors will be able to see almost all of Rutland, Rutland Town, Clarendon, etc. The area is frequented by moose, deer, and turkeys. The "Airport Vista" is a previously unnamed vista located between the named Pico and Red Rock Vistas. This spot offers a great view of the Rutland Airport and the southern end of the Rutland valley.
To get there: From Main Street Rutland take Killington Avenue approximately 1.8 miles east to the end. When Killington Avenue ends at a perpendicular road take a right onto Notch Road. Follow Notch road south-east for approximately 2 miles. At 43.35.41N/72.54.64W you should see a sign on the right hand side of the road for the Bald Mountain Trail. This is the trailhead. Park on the road and head in.
The shortest path to the cache is approximately 1 mile via the Pico Vista route. The numerous trails are fairly well established and marked with blue paint and signs. There are multiple routes to/from the cache and we would encourage you to checkout a number of the vistas. The Lower Loop trail circles the mountain top and offers a variety of views of Rutland, south, west, and even north towards Pittsford.
When you find a unmarked unnamed vista with a great view of the Rutland Airport you are very close to the cache. It is located under a small indentation in a large rock.
Cache Notes - There is a disposable camera in the cache, take your picture with the beautiful vista as the background. Also please sign the logbook in the cache.
