Geocache Description:

Park at gate by Hasta Trail parking sign. This trailhead provides access for bikers, hikers, snowshoers and skiers. HASTA (Hayward Area Ski Trail Assoc. grooms the trails in winter for classic skiing. During hunting season it is wise to wear orange. The cache is a camouflage gallon container filled with many goodies. Stealth may be required as muggles are often present!

This is one of three independent caches located on one square mile of property owned by the Hayward Area Memorial Hospital, whose administration has approved these caches and encourages the publics recreational/non-motorized use of the land. The history of the hospital property began in 1901 as an Indian Boarding School operated by the Indian Service of the federal government. It housed a school house, dormitories, mess hall, warehouse and later a barn, and farm buildings. In 1929, work began on the Indian Service Hospital. It served the government until 1952. During the depression the complex, with the exception of the hospital, was utilized by Dept of Labor for a transient camp. The Hayward Area Memorial Hosp Assoc was organized in 1947 for securing a hospital for the Hayward area. Negotiations were made with the federal and state government when it appeared the hospital might be available to the community. The hospital was opened to the public July 1,1953 under the operation of Lutheran Hospitals and Homes Society of Fargo N.D. The hospital was rennovated in 1956 and enlarged in 1977. A nursing home was built in 1970 and two on site clinics; the Duluth Clinic-Hayward, and Northwoods Medical were attached in late 90's. The hospital was rennovated and expanded most recently in 2004. The land around the hospital remains available for non-motorized public use, for hiking, biking, skiing, fishing, snowshoeing and hunting.
