***MUGGLED AGAIN!***
Mt. Gleason "LA04" is one of a ring of Nike Missle Sites that
defended L.A in the 1950s and 60s, see link to map below. The radar
towers, similar to one at the "LA96" San Vicente (Encino) Nike Base
on Dirt Mulholland, were taken down in the 1980s. This area was the
control part of the site, the prison camp you pass on the way was
the launching site.
Can be reached via Angeles Forest Hwy from Hwy 2 or Hwy 14. At
Mill Creek Summit, follow sign to Mt. Gleason. Further on, follow
sign to "public campgrounds" NOT "state prison camp". After about
10 miles, park near yellow gate at N34° 22.368' x W118° 10.389',
and follow paved road behind gate. The top of the mountain is about
1/3 mile. Cache is located on south slope of hill facing great view
of SF Valley, Downtown L.A., and beyond. The container is the usual
tupperware-type.
Enjoy The View!
