Gammo's "The old airfield"
Een ca. 6,5 km lange wandeling door de duinen van Oostvoorne. Van waypoint 3 tot en met waypoint 8 loop je rond het oude vliegveld. Ook daarna is de tocht echt de moeite waard.
An about 6.5 km. walk through the dunes of Oostvoorne. From waypoint 3 to waypoint 8 you circle the old airfield, but also after that the walk is absolutely worth while.
| In de duinen van Oostvoorne heeft vroeger een heus vliegveld gelegen. Het idee om een vliegveld aan te leggen ontstond in 1928 en werd aangewakkerd door de gebruikers van het toenmalige 18 holes golfterrein in Oostvoorne. (zie ook Gammo's "De oude golfbaan" GCVYZ2). Deze gebruikers beschikten veelal over sportvliegtuigjes en maakte al regelmatig gebruik van het strand als landingsbaan.
In deze tijd lijkt het een beetje overdreven om voor de Rotterdamse golfers een vliegveld aan te leggen bij Oostvoorne, maar de reistijd Rotterdam > Oostvoorne bedroeg in die tijd ruim 2 uur.
In earlier days, in the dunes of Oostvoorne, there has been an airfield. The idea to exploit an airfield arose in 1928. The users of the golfcourse nearby encouraged the airfield. Most of them owned a small airplane and used the nearby beach as unofficial landingstrip.
Nowadays, it's seems a bit ridiculous to construct an airfield for the distance Rotterdam Oostvoorne, but in those days it took more than 2 hours of traveling.

In 1930 was het zover. Het vliegveld werd geopend door dhr C. Kolff, voorzitter van de Rotterdamsche Aero Club. Al snel bleek dat niet alleen de golfers, maar ook KLM en de Marine Vliegdienst interesse hadden in het vliegveld. KLM overwoog om vanaf het Rotterdamse vliegveld "Waalhaven" een lijndienst op te zetten, wellicht met een verbinding naar Knokke in Belgie. De oliemaatschappij APC zag in het vliegveld natuurlijk een interessante afnemer van brandstoffen en smeermiddelen.
In 1930 the airfield was opened by Mr. C Kolff, chairman of the Rotterdam Aero club. Soon it was clear that not only the golfers but also the Royal Dutch airline KLM and the Marine were interested in the airfield. KLM investigated the possibility to start a schedule from the Waalhaven Airport and possible connections to Knokke in Belgium. Oil-refinery APC offered fuel and lubricants to the airport.

| Het vliegveld heeft dienst gedaan tot 25 februari 1939. Toen heeft de nieuwe eigenaar, het Administratiefonds Rotterdam, zelf verzocht de vergunning in te trekken. In het begin van de jaren '40 (10 mei 1940) heeft het vliegveld nog eenmaal een goede dienst bewezen aan Nederlandse Fokker G1's. Na wat schermutselingen met de Duitsers, waren zij zonder branstof komen te zitten en hebben een noodlanding gemaakt op het vliegveld.
The airfield was operated until February 25th 1939. The new owner, Administrationfund Rotterdam asked to revoke the licence themselves. On May 10th, the airfield was once again useful for 3 Dutch Fokker G1's. They had to land on the strip because, after struggling with some German airplanes, they ran out of fuel.

Het vliegveld is nu een natuurgebied waar runderen en pony's rondlopen en verschillende vogelsoorten broeden. Ook komen er verschillende zeldzame planten voor op het voormalig vliegveldterrein.
In de winter wordt het oude vliegveldterrein gebruikt door de plaatselijke ijsvereniging die er een prachtige ijsbaan van maakt.

Nowadays, the airfield is a nice piece of nature where Galloways and pony's walk around and various birds hatch. Also various threatened plants grow on the former airfield.
In the winter the airfield turns into a nice icerink.

En nu de cache zelf:
Parkeren kan op bovenstaande lokatie. Er staat een bord "verboden in te rijden", maar er is zo'n 30 meter verder een veelgebruikte parkeerplaats.
De cacheroute bestaat uit een 18-tal waypoints. Deze waypoints kunnen hier worden gedownload in .wpt formaat.Ook kunt u de waypoints onderaan de pagina terugvinden. Het gemakkelijkst (en kortst) is om deze 18 waypoints in deze volgorde af te lopen en op elk waypoint goed om u heen te kijken.
Bij vijf van deze waypoints kunt u informatie vinden. Deze informatie staat hierna in willekeurige volgorde. Noteer bij de vragen het nummer van het waypoint waar u de informatie heeft gevonden:

E) Hier heb je een prachtig uitzicht over de vliegveldvallei. Vroeger stond hier een roodstenen baken, en de resten kun je nog zien. WP=
And now for the cache itself:
Parking is possible on above location. Just ignore the sign and park about 30 meters further on a commonly used parking-place.
The cacheroute consists of 18 waypoints. These waypoints can be downloaded here in .wpt format. You can also find the waypoints at the bottom of the cachepage. The easiest way (and shortest route) is to visit these waypoints in this order and look around carefully on each waypoint.
At five of these waypoints you can find information. This information is written below in random order. Write down the number of the waypoint where you found the information.

E) Here you have a beautiful view over the airfield valley. There used to be a red-brick beacon. You can still see some remains.
