Geocache Description:

When I first moved here, this was near a very rough dirt road. The road is now bitumen and a much more comfortable ride! Ballan Scoria used to work this nearby hill and most of the scoria around town would have come from this volcanic cone however I am unable to find anything online about it now.....see below!

This cache is only suitable for children if they are on a very tight lead. The VFT (train) runs right past and the rail line is accessible via the crossing near the cache. Cache is now a small systema. Let me know if it is damaged at all and I will replace the container. It contains, logbook and toys. Enjoy the ride! You do not need to go onto private property! If your "lucky" you may see the VFT go whizzing past.

Thanks to caughtatwork for this information and permission to use it in the description!

"The scoria mine mentioned in this cache is Mt Darriwell a composite lava /scoria eruption point of "local significance" as deemed by the Geological Society of Australia (Victoria Division).

A cinder cone or scoria cone is a steep conical hill of volcanic fragments that accumulate around and downwind from a volcanic vent. The rock fragments, often called cinders or scoria, are glassy and contain numerous gas bubbles "frozen" into place as magma exploded into the air and then cooled quickly.

Mt Darriwell being a composite lava / scoria eruption point shows attributes of both a lava hill (see below) and a scoria cone.

Mt Darriewll is part of the Newer Volcanics Province which describes the area of volcanic activity in Western Victoria younger than 7 million years ago.

If you approach the cache location from the east heading west approximately 1-2km before the cache location, you may also notice a lava hill which is part of the same volcanic province. The lava hill is not named other than referred to as "unnamed BM1".

A lava hill is a volcanic cone composed primarily of lava flows rather the explosions of ejecta or pyroclastic flows. Sometimes the cone can contain a convex profile due to flank flows of viscous lava. Many lava hills grow by internal intrusion of lava that causes swelling and oversteepening of the dome. Rock slides build up an apron of talus blocks around the lower sides of the dome. Lava hills can form mounds several hundred metres high and from several hundred to more than 1,000 metres in diameter. Thick lava flows sometimes move short distances from the dome and distort its generally circular or oval shape."
