Geocache Description:

Located at site of Thomasville Civil War Prison Camp. Historical marker is on property. Looking for an ammo can . This small park is well maintained. Should be an easy find.

Fearing possible invasion by Gen Sherman's forces, CSA decided to evacuate Andersonville prison. During the first week of December in 1864 5000 Union prisoners were moved by rail to this five acre location. Prisoners were used to clear trees and construct shelters. Slaves from local plantations were directed to dig a deep trench to secure the camp.

As in Andersonville Prison, prisoners died daily and deaths numbered several hundred during a brief three week period. Typhoid, pox and diarrhea took this toll. Local residents did attempt to assist the prisoners. The First Methodist Church served as a hospital while members moved services to the courthouse. Many prisoners were buried there.

Prisoners were held here only briefly. They were marched 60 miles to Albany and returned by rail to Andersonville where they arrived on Christmas eve.

A few prisoners did escape from the prison. Local slaves did provide assist.
And yes, a haunting is associated with this history.
