Geocache Description:

The cache and Derryhubbert Bog are located within Peatlands Country Park. The park can be accessed from Junction 13 of the M1 Motorway. Follow the direction signs to the main entrance and follow the access road to the car park.

The park opened in 1990, has an area of 265ha. Contained within, are two National Nature Reserves comprising wooded drumlin hills and cut and uncut peat bog. Derryhubbert Bog is a large flat expanse of lowland raised bog in the centre of the park. The Irish Peat Development Company started peat extraction in 1901 and in the first part of the last Century, peat was extensively cut and largely exported. Three hundred workers were employed in the company's heyday. The bog has a rich and diverse flora and fauna which is being regenerated by blocking its drainage channels and raising the level of the water. The Irish Peat Development Company installed a narrow gauge railway to transport the peat. Part of this has been restored and is in operation as a visitor attraction. The cache is a 2 litre lunch box placed 0.9km from the car park. KEEP TO TRACKS AND PATHS AT ALL TIMES
