Geocache Description:

A postcard from Paris

Learn what a single post card from Paris can cause…

Resen City

Once upon the time (in the beginning of the 20th century, to be more precise), an Ottoman Albanian Bey, called Ahmed Niyazi, ruled the district of Resen, a small town near Prespa lake. As a reward for his devoted work for the Ottoman Empire, he was offered to move to Paris, France, to represent the Empire. However, as it happens even in the fairy tales, an opponent occurred and left to Paris instead… After some time, deceived Ahmed Niyazi Bey received an post card from Paris with a picture of some of Versailles palaces on it. And with a note from his opponent: “This is where you should stay and where I stay instead…”

Ahmed Niyazi Bey directed his anger and frustration in a very constructive way – he ordered to built a copy of the postcard palace in real, here in Resen! Bravo, Ahmed Niyazi Bey []… And, finally, he sent a photo of finished palace to his opponent in Paris with a note: “I possess this one!”

Saray

Few facts more about this amazing building: it was called Saray, meaning palace in Turkish.

Construction of the Saray began in 1905. The exterior of the building was completed in 1909 after the Young Turk Revolution, though everything else, including the interior, was not completed until a few years after the Balkan Wars and World War I in 1922. Poor Ahmed Niyazi Bey, however, died in 1912 and therefore never lived to see his estate completed.

After the Balkan Wars, the Saray served several different functions for several different organisations. It was first used for local administrative purposes under the Kingdom of Serbia, then under the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. During World War II, the building was used by occupying forces. After the war, it was used as the city hall of Resen and, later, as a city library. The building is now home to a museum, a ceramic colony, a gallery, and a library.

The cache is a micro magnetic plastic film container.
