The Imatrankoski rapids are the oldest tourist attraction in Finland. With Hotel Valtionhotelli they build a Finnish National Landscape.
The rapids were formed about 5,000 years ago when water from the Lake Saimaa broke through the Salpausselkä ridge at Vuoksenniska. The numerous giants' cauldrons also known as potholes or giants kettles (~hiidenkirnu in Finnish) tell their own story of the power of the rapids at that time. Water has "drilled" with a harder stone a deep hole into a softer stone. More useful information (e.g. timetable of the rapids shows) is available here: Read more
