Geocache Description:

In the early 1800's as white settlers made their way into the land of the Upper Creek Indians, the great Shawnee leader Tecumseh came to visit the tribes and urged them to form a confederation to preserve the Indian lands and way of life. In August 1813 a band of wariors led by Chief William Weatherford (aka "Red Eagle") attacked Fort Mims, a small outpost north of Mobile, and slaughtered over 500 men, women, and children.

At his home in Nashville, General Andrew Jackson was recovering from a gunshot wound in his arm. When he heard about the massacre, he gathered together a band of Tennessee militia consisting of over 2,000 men, and supplemented it with 1,000 Lower Creek and Cherokee warriors. In 1813 Jackson's men began a series of campaigns, many of which were unsuccessful. The morale of his men was low and many of them panicked under fire.

March 27, 1814 would be an important day for General Jackson. This would be his day of victory and the day of defeat for the Upper Creek Indians. Come visit the grounds and learn about the men who were here on this day!

Before you begin your journey, take a few minutes to stop at the visitor center and view a 20 minute film about the great battle. There are also audio tours available should you want to pick one up.
