Newbie74 Memorial TB Hotel Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

crossseeker77: It is with regret that I have decided to archive my first and most favorite geocache hide. I put a lot of effort into making this cache a nice tribute to a lady I never met, but who made a big contribution to the geocaching community with her unique hides. (I also wanted to make it a TB Hotel for my geo-friend, Joggerjan, to have lots of trackables to discover and move.) :-)

I was advised to publish it as a premium multicache so there would be less chance of the ammo can or TBs getting muggled. Unfortunately, I made it so secure that very few people came to visit it-- sometimes only a couple people per year. (I now know that TB Hotels need to be in a higher traffic location!)

One of the cache highlights was to be awarded the Travel Bug Hotels of America 5-Bug Badge of Honor. The favorite point rating was in the 90-percent range for quite some time (63% at time of archiving), so those who did visit seemed to like it. Sadly, the time investment in maintaining the cache and the trackables year-round (ie. "ice & snow duty") became discouraging with so few logging it. So with lessons learned, I will find a nice new location for this ammo can. I uploaded some pics so those who didn't make the trip here can see what the cache was like. Thank you to everyone for your great log comments and for the favorite points. I appreciate it! Cache on!

Congratulations to Maine to Massachusetts for FTF!

*NEWBIE74'S CACHING BIO*
Peggi Dean (11/24/1935—9/27/2013)—known to fellow geocachers as “Newbie74”—made a big impact for geocaching in a little more than three years. She started caching as Newbie74 on May 6, 2010, along with her husband, Les, who helped her in both finding and hiding caches. Many of Newbie’s caches are located in the area surrounding her hometown of Milo, but her influence extends all over central Maine. Her contribution to geocaching has provided me with many enjoyable moments in my new hobby!

Newbie owned 60 geocaches (59 traditional caches and 1 multi-cache). Here is the complete list: Visit link

My hope is that each time a geocacher finds one of her hides, he or she would consider leaving it in better condition than they found it. For those who would like to join together to maintain her legacy in this way, it will enable her creativity and wit to be enjoyed by cachers and their families for years to come! Helping to care for something that meant so much to her can be just a small token of our appreciation in her memory compared to the joy she has brought to so many people. Feel free to post photos on the cache page and/or to share memories of Newbie in the log book or online.

*CACHE DESCRIPTION*
Park at the Sebec Town Office, 29 North Road (Harland A. Ladd Municipal Building.) If you are facing the front of the building, the trail is in the woods to the left of the parking lot between the building and the blueberry field. DO NOT ENTER THE FIELD AS THIS IS A NO TRESPASSING AREA. In spring, summer, and autumn, the cache is an easy 2/10 mile walk (one way) on a non-maintained woods road, but in winter it is harder depending on the snow depth; snowshoes will make it easier. The D/T rating is based on non-winter conditions.

The posted coordinates will take you to the first stage along the trail where you will find the coordinates for the final cache location. Stage 1 is a small camo-covered container with the final coordinates inside. Once you get to ground zero at stage 2, you shouldn’t have any problem locating the cache, but please note that the cache container is NOT accessible from the side closest to the trail without damaging the hiding spot.

The cache container is a .50 caliber ammo can well-stocked with quality swag. There are 4 zip lock bags inside: one for the logbook; one for trackables and instruction sheets on how to properly log them; one for adult swag; and one for kids’ swag. Please hide both containers well when you leave. Cache placed with permission from landowner.

*HOTEL TRACKABLE INFO*
If you have not logged trackables before, the baggie contains instruction sheets to take with you or you can find directions here: Visit link. Please be sure you are willing to log your part of a trackable’s journey (picking it up and dropping it off) before removing it from the cache. I made the hotel a multi-cache so it would be more secure, but unfortunately that also limits the traffic somewhat. I would be happy to move a TB along to another cache at the TB owner's request, and will do my best to keep them moving during the winter. I hope you enjoy my first geocache hide!
