Geocache Description:

A 50 cal ammo can hid above the hideout of notorious British loyalist and revolutionary war spy Lt. James Moody.

Lt. James Moody was a famous Tory and British loyalist during the revolutionary war. Before the war, he was a local farmer who was rather well off. When the war began, he recruited a band of men to support the king and suppress the revolution. From the caves along Muckshaw pond, he coordinated his attacks on the American troops.

There is a significant amount of folk lore revolving around Lt. Moody. It's said that the cave here connects to miles of underground passageways which allowed him to escape. He had a large amount of treasure that has yet to be found to this day. His ghost is said to still haunt the are of the Muckshaw ponds.

Please refer to the related webpage for a more detailed history of Lt. James Moody.

This cache has a terrain rating of 4 for a couple of reasons.

There is a large section of private land in the center of the park which you should not trespass on. When placed, we had to hike the long way around the pond to get to the location. This hide in on preserve property, however the preserve is rather new and some of the old posted signs still exist. Please make sure you grab a map on the way in. Also, please check out the scanned copy of the map attached to this lisitng.

Secondly, it's a very swampy area with highly varied and dramatic terrain. We hid this in the winter when the pond was frozen. This made traveling through the swamp so much easier. I can imagine that it's near impossible to find your way through the pond in the summer if the conditions are wet. Perhaps there is another way in off of Fredon/Springdale road which I haven't discovered.

If you can make it to ground zero, It shouldn't be too bad a hide. It's located above the site of the cave as to reduce the possibility that it's uncovered by muggles. Make sure you make your way down to the cave and check out the site.

Good luck and happy caching. Please remember our cut if you find Moody's treasure!
