This cache is named for its location between Tironui Drive leading up the hill, and one of Hawkes Bay's oldest-established wineries, worked for many years by Tom McDonald, famed as the father of quality red wines in NZ.
Tom McDonald (1908 - 1986) was only 14 years old when he started his wine-making career. At the age of 19 he bought the business, and went on over many years to develop a range of top quality red wines. In 1974 he was awarded an OBE in recognition of his services to the NZ wine industry. He retired in 1976, and died ten years later. His name lives on in buildings and products at the site. There is a fascinating museum of wine history, set up in old concrete cellars beneath newer structures. The site also features cellar door sales, a restaurant, and beautiful park-like grounds which are the venue for various musical events during the year.
If you go up to the top of Tironui Drive you will reach a Napier City Council Reserve in honour of Lance Leikis, a past planner of the city. From here you can see good views over the local area. If you climb higher, and follow the walking track to the trig at the top of the Sugar Loaf Hill Reserve, you will see the whole of Napier City, and farther afield to Mahia Peninsula in the north, Cape Kidnappers in the east, Te Mata Peak to the south-east, and the Kaweka Ranges to the west.
