Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Pieces of 8 Challenge! Some of the world's most famous pirates have visited the North Country and left behind a large treasure chest of their richest valuables. Each of the notorious pirates then left behind a separate cache with a hint for you to find the motherload. There are 8 caches for each of the 8 pirates, plus the motherload. The pirates left a part of the coordinates for the motherload in each of their caches. They don't need to be found in order, but they all need to be found to get the final coordinates for the motherload. Bartholomew Roberts was born in 1682 in Wales. Not much is known of his early life, but it is thought that he went to sea early, possibly as early as age 13. The first time he reappears in records is 1718 in Barbados as a crewmember. In 1719, he was the second mate of a slave ship, the Princess, anchored off the west coast of Africa, when it was over taken by pirates. The Princess's crew were forced to join the pirates or die. Roberts obviously joined and quickly realized the advantages of the pirate life and within 6 weeks was elected captain after the death of the captain that captured him. Roberts was known for his navigational skills and his outspoken and opinionated personality. Not long after becoming captain, Roberts sailed his ship to Brazil where they encountered a fleet of Portuguese ships, quickly overtaking them and the plunder they contained. For years, Roberts and his crew sailed back and forth between the Africa and Brazil, taking ships and plunder until 1722 when Roberts and his crew were ambushed by the English and Roberts was killed by grapeshot. Bartholomew Roberts is known for creating the pirate code, which established a set of rules the pirates would swear upon the bible to uphold. His nickname, Black Bart, was never used in his lifetime.
