Waukonsa- from Polk City’s Early History Before 1900, Roxana Currie, 2000, Camp Pope Publishing: Iowa City, Iowa.
“Polk City’s oral history includes persistent reference to the Native American village, Waukonsa. The original surveyor records and maps make no mention of a village…” However, early white residents of Polk City are said to have built their cabins from left over Waukonsa structures. One early resident, Alexander Swim, “fixed up his cabin with the Indian household remains, moved his family into the domicile in 1847, and placed his name among the earliest settlers of Madison Township.”
