Gull Rock is a 13 metre high rocky islet (see uploaded photo), which offers a safe perching spot for thousands of Crowned cormorants and gulls. The rocky island beyond the harbour is also home to breeding Bank Cormorant. The nests on the top right of the island belong to this species, and should preferably be viewed through a telescope.
When approaching the cache co-ordinates you will notice the Fish House or Vishuis, a building on your left hand side. The Fish House is the oldest building in Yzerfontein. Historically, the house was used for the storage of: salt that was scraped from the nearby saltpans and dried fish, known as "bokkoms"
Today the Fish House is home to the Yzerfontein Tourism Bureau. The house has white-washed walls and a thatched roof. During the winter storms, waves sometimes skirt against the lawn in front of the building. At the Fish House, there are a number of unique historical photos of Yzerfontein.
