Alta Valtellina is a land rich in history. It can be seen as an
extraordinary adventure arts and culture by visiting its beautiful
old towns, the rural dwellings and archaeological sites, the
towers, the churches and the castles. They are all signs of past
that over the years have retained their charm.
The two
dams of Cancano are two water reservoirs owned by
the energy company
A2A, a company that has been founded in
2008 by the merge of the electricity company in Milan (
AEM),
the original owner of the dams, and the electricity company of
Brescia (
ASM).
Together, the two basins have a total capacity which is around 187
million cubic meters of water and they feed mainly hydroelectric
Premadio. The dams are fed mainly by the river
Adda, which
has its origin not far from here and from the channels
Spol,
Gavia-Forni-Braulio and
Viola Bormina.
The
dam of Cancano (also known as
dam of Fraele) is
among the two, the bigger and older one. Its first construction
began in 1925 and was completed eight years later. Originally was
design to contain 20 million cubic meters of water to feed the
small power plant of Fraele. Over time, however, the growing energy
demand grew and that brought to the construction of a second dam
(
of San Giacomo) and in 1956, in just three years, was
realized the new
dam of Cancano with a capacity of about 123
million cubic meters of water.
The
dam of San Giacomo has a capacity of 64 million cubic
meters and its construction, begun in 1940 to replace the old
dam of Cancano was very slow because of the World War II.
From the engineering point of view, this dam is considered a real
masterpiece, considering the means of the period and the solutions
adopted.
