the cache is hidden about six or seven miles west of gridley, just north of the gray lodge wildlife preserve. you will notice a concrete structure with the date "1949" etched into it.
in 1949 the first jet airliner appeared, NATO was formed, the u.s. recognized the state of israel, and the usaf made the first around-the-world nonstop flight (in 94 hours). the first emmy awards were handed out, cable tv debuted, and arthur miller won the pulitzer prize for his play "death of a salesman." popular songs that year were "some enchanted evening," "ghost riders in the sky," and "rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer." the yankees beat the brooklyn dodgers in the world series, and the boxer joe louis retired. those born in 1949 include billy joel, bruce jenner, bruce springsteen, george foreman, john belushi, meryl streep, and richard gere. silly putty was introduced, and the precursor of the pamper was developed.
