Western Toad - An Island Spirit Legacy.

The Cowichan Valley Trail will take you from Duncan through Lake Cowichan and down past the Kinsol Trestle following former CN and E&N railway lines. With many access points and 8 trestles, it's a beautiful trail to walk, jog or bike. From the Island Spirit Team, we hope you enjoy your time in the Cowichan Valley.

All the Island Spirit Legacy Caches are within a 2 steps of the trail, unless otherwise noted. There is no need to bushwack or trample the vegetation.

Western Toad

The Western Toad, Anaxyrus boreas or Bufo boreas, as both names are correct, is a large toad, between 5.6 and 13 cm long, found throughout western North America. It has a white or cream dorsal stripe, and has a dusky gray or greenish back with skin glands concentrated within the dark blotches. The female lays up to 17,000 eggs stuck together in strings that adhere to vegetation and other objects along water edges, which helps to explain why this is not a threatened or endangered species. Adults often vocalize, making a sound like a peeping chick.
