Flyttblock.
Erratiska block, geol., sådana på jordytan liggande stenblock, om hvilka man, på grund af deras beskaffenhet och underlag m. m., tydligen kan bevisa, att de blifvit flyttade en längre eller kortare vägsträcka från sina ursprungliga hemklyfter till de platser, der de nu befinna sig. En sådan flyttning anses hafva i allmänhet egt rum medelst infands-is och glacierer eller flytande isberg.
Flyttblockens storlek vexlar från några få till flere tiotal af fot i genomskärning. Sådana med ända till 30 fots sidor äro ej sällsynta.
Inom Sveriges alla provinser är förekomsten af flyttblock en mycket vanlig företeelse; så också inom vidsträckta delar af det öfriga Europa och Nord-Amerika. De ligga dels midt på slätterna, dels på grusbackar och bergshöjder m. m. De flesta flyttblock inom Sverige utgöras af gneis och granit m. fl. urformationens bergarter, men sådana af kalksten, sandsten o. s. v. finnas också. Roslagens block af röd sandsten härstamma från Gefletraktens sandstenslager och uppsökas för att användas till slip- och qvarnstenar, byggnadssten m. m. --
På nordtyska slättlandet träffas flyttblock, som bevisligen härröra från Skandinaviens berg. De block af granit m. m., hvilka nu befinnas hvila på Jurabergets kalkstenar vid gränsen mellan Frankrike och Schweiz, härstamma från Alperna, och de hafva således måst passera den mellanliggande, djupa och breda Schweizdalen, en af de största dalgångar i verlden. Detta måste hafva skett på en tid, då nämnda dal varit utfylld med is och alpglaciererna nått ända fram till Jurabergen. E. E.

A glacial erratic is a piece of rock that differs from the size and type of rock native to the area in which it rests. "Erratics" take their name from the Latin word errare, and are carried by glacial ice, often over distances of hundreds of kilometres. Erratics can range in size from pebbles to large boulders such as Big Rock (16,500 tons) in Alberta. Geologists identify erratics by studying the rocks surrounding the position of the erratic and the composition of the erratic itself. Erratics are significant because:
* Since they are transported by glaciers, they are one of a series of indicators which mark the path of prehistoric glacier movement. Their lithographic origin can be traced to the parent bedrock, allowing for confirmation of the ice flow route.
* They can be transported by ice-rafting. This allows quantification of the extent of glacial flooding resulting from ice dam failure which release the waters stored in proglacial lakes such as Lake Missoula. Erratics released by ice-rafts that were stranded and subsequently melt, dropping their load, allow characterization of the high water marks for transient floods in areas like temporary Lake Lewis.
* Erratics dropped by icebergs melting in the ocean can be used to track Antarctic and Arctic-region glacial movements for periods prior to record retention. These can be correlated with ocean temperatures and levels to better understand and calibrate models of the global climate.
