Welcome to the hidden Baltimore County gem that is Turner Station Park. It has one of the finest boat launches anywhere, a lovely pavilion, well-kept grounds, and an onsite caretaker, Mr. Sam Walker, who keeps order in this small but tidy little park.
Turner Station was established in the late 1800's as African-American residents began to move up to Baltimore from the South to take jobs at Sparrows Point and in the Marine Terminal. The little settlement grew and hit its peak during World War II when The Point was at its busiest. Since then, like many communities in the area, Turner Station has declined, with many of the older residents passing on and many of the younger people moving out. Still, the community is a close-knit one where neighbors know one another and people take pride in their homes.
The caretaker lives at the park and keeps an eagle eye on the comings and goings. Everyone in the community knows him as he has been keeping watch over this little waterside retreat for two decades. Mr. Walker is aware that the cache has been placed and is happy that it will bring new people into the area. Just know that he will no doubt be watching as you go into this historic area to retrieve the cache.
The park is small with ample parking, though the aforementioned boat ramp stays quite busy. The cache is next to a trail that has been worn by the feet of young people entering the park from the nearby housing development. Make sure you aren't being watched as you enter GZ or else this cache won't last long.
You can open and close the cache container without ever moving it from its location. Make sure to screw the lid closed tightly so the container doesn't take on water.
Mr. Walker closes his park promptly at 8:00 p.m. in the summertime and at dark during the cooler months. Do not attempt to enter the park once the gate is closed.
This cache is part of a series called "Coming to Baltimore" that highlights places of historical or cultural significance to groups that settled in Southeastern Baltimore County and East Baltimore, including the Native Americans, English, Irish, African-Americans, Jews, Italians, Greeks, and Hispanics.
This series is the by-product of a semester-long project that my ENGL101 students at CCBC Dundalk completed this semester. They had to conduct research into each of these groups and identify these historic sites. Thanks goes to the CCBC Geocachers for assisting with placement of the series.
