Geocache Description:

Located along Lizzy's Trail adjacent to the Ipswich River at Bradley Palmer State Park in Hamilton, Massachusetts

In 2004, the American Hiking Society named Lizzy’s Trail as one of the top ten most family-friendly trails across the country. One of the first wheelchair accessible trails in eastern Massachusetts, Lizzy’s Trail, is named for Lizzy Heerlein, a local resident who uses a wheelchair. The trail, located in Bradley Palmer State Park, runs from the park entrance at the Lamson House (take the first left after you enter the park), parallel to the Ipswich River, and ends at the wooden bridge over the Ipswich River opposite the entrance to Willowdale State Park. "This trail will allow fishing for people who would not otherwise have access'" stated the Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Management, Peter Webber. Along with State Senator Bruce Tarr and State Representative Brad Hill, Commissioner Webber dedicated the trail at the Hamilton Conservation Commission's anual National Trails Day event.

One unique aspect of the trail is a boardwalk along a section of the trail with the banks of the Ipswich River on one side and a freshwater wetland on the other. The concept is to enable a person in a wheelchair to get as close as possible to natural settings and be surrounded by nature. Another unique feature, which again is a first for this part of the State, is the use of a soil stabilizing agent. The material binds soil and crushed aggregate together creating a natural appearing, firm trail surface suitable for wheelchairs.

A carabiner flashlight, first aid kit, camping matches, and a survival blanket are some of the original items in this cache.
