La palabra cryptex es un neologismo acuñado por el autor Dan Brown por su novela de 2003 "El Código Da Vinci", que denota un dispositivo portátil utilizado para ocultar mensajes secretos. Es una combinación de las palabras criptología y el codex; un título apropiado para este dispositivo, ya que utiliza "la ciencia de la criptografía para proteger la información escrita en el rollo que lo contiene o códice" (pág. 199 de la novela). La (primera) cryptex que aparece en la novela se describe como un cilindro de piedra que comprende "cinco discos de mármol que habían sido apilados y colocados entre sí dentro de un marco de latón delicado"; las tapas de los extremos hacen imposible ver el interior del cilindro hueco. Cada uno de los discos se talla con el alfabeto entero y se pueden girar independientemente para crear diferentes combinaciones de letras alineadas, incluyendo, pero no limitado, a palabras, iniciales, y anagramas.
