Although animal pounds were once very common in rural, agricultural towns like Shapleigh, of the 100-200 that were once in use, it is estimated that there could be less than 20 still standing. If a farmer found a stray cow or horse, he would bring it to the pound and the owner would have to pay a fee to reclaim his animal.
