Geocache Description:

Tower Liada (Tower of Daglas)

A Frankish tower at the hill Liada near Markopoulo in Attica region, east of the village Dagla.

The tower was built by the Franks in the period when the Burgundian family of De LaRoche were the rulers of the Duchy of Athens, i.e. sometime in the 13th century.

The tower was part of a network of similar towers which secured the timely warning and the defense in cases of pirate raids. Moreover, the tower must have served as a surveying point for the field in the area and as a house of a local lord.

The square tower is 8,5m high and has two floors. It used to be 3 floors, but the locals used a lot of materials from the tower to build their houses. The tower is also made of pieces from ancient buildings. The same applies for the the church of Taxiarches which is on the same hill.

The entrance is free but rather difficult through the opening of the ground-floor. There is an opening also from the interior of the ground-floor to the second floor, but the access is dangerous.

The cache is a small plastic cylindrical box, containing the logbook and a pencil. Anyhow, carry with you your own pen, just in case. After logging, please return the cache exactly to the same place where you found it. Thanks.
