Geocache Description:

This cache was placed within sight of a well known landmark on the Fife Coastal path, an old abandoned static caravan which looked out over the sea. Unfortunately the caravan was taken away in Spring 2023. If you want to imagine where it used to be, look no further than the brand new cabin which is being built on the same site, no doubt this will also be used for holiday letting, but I imagine will offer home comforts unimaginable to the holidaymakers who rented the original caravan 50 or so years ago!

If you look back on the logs, a previous cacher has taken a photo where you can just see the old caravan in the distance. But I'll give you some idea of how things used to be. Up until about 2015, you could look in the windows of the old caravan and still see easy chairs in the lounge, beds in the bedroom, even cutlery in the kitchen drawers. This was the case for a few years, then in about 2017 the furniture, which had become quite mouldy, was taken away, and the rooms lay empty for a few more years. As time passed the kitchen door was kicked in, so it was then possible to go inside and look around. The lounge where the easy chairs used to be was dark, the original picture window and the front door having been boarded up. The bathroom featured an old fashioned sink, toilet, medicine cabinet and the smallest bath you ever saw. In the Master Bedroom there was still a padded plastic headboard attached to the wall so you could see where the bed used to be and how little space there was. In the kids room next door, there was Thomas the Tank Engine wallpaper and some old military style chairs. Some wag had arranged empty beer bottles in a line on a shelf on the wall of the kids room. These stayed there for a few years, then wind and vandals caused them to fall to the floor and be smashed. Bizarrely, the carpet cleaner in the kids bedroom still worked up until about 2018!

It was an eerie and weird sight, a window into some family's happy holiday 50 or so years ago. I wish I'd photographed it. The pictures are still very vivid in my mind. Hopefully the cache will keep the memory of those Post-War 1960s/1970s holidays alive for a few more years. It was an age of innocence and fun, like an Enid Blyton story come alive. Things were much simpler, but despite basic facilities people knew how to have fun without the need for technology and gadgets.

The cache is a little further up the coast but still within sight of where the caravan used to be and where the new cabin is being built now. Just off the coastal path, it is easily accessible to all and is a small square lock and lock box. Enjoy the views!
